Job Description
Defenders of Wildlife is a national, non-profit membership organization dedicated to the protection of all native animals and plants in their natural communities.

At Defenders of Wildlife, we focus our programs on what scientists consider two of the most serious environmental threats to the planet: the accelerating rate of extinction of species and the associated loss of biological diversity, and habitat alteration and destruction. We work to protect and restore America’s native wildlife, safeguard habitat, resolve conflicts, work across international borders and educate and mobilize the public. We stand out in our commitment to saving imperiled wildlife and championing the Endangered Species Act, the landmark law that protects them.

We seek talented individuals dedicated to the conservation of our nation's wildlife and natural resources, and we offer our staff competitive salary and exceptional benefits.

POSITION TITLE: Living Lands Project Manager

SUPERVISOR: Director of Conservation Planning

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Living Lands Project Manager serves as the main representative for Defenders of Wildlife’s ongoing biodiversity conservation project, the “Living Lands” project. The project is designed to increase the capacity of local land trusts to strategically protect, enhance, and restore native wildlife habitat and biodiversity with respect to climate change and other threats. The Living Lands project assists local land trusts in making decisions that will conserve high-priority native habitats and species through strategic protection and effective land stewardship, with a strong focus on restoration and management of native habitats for long-term benefits.

The Project Manager serves as primary liaison with the land trust community; oversees project activities, and gauges progress in meeting project goals; delivers presentations; identifies and engages new partners; and develops ideas for fundraising. The Project Manager works closely with Defenders’ staff experts in Land Conservation, Conservation Economics, Conservation Planning, Climate Change, and Field Conservation Programs.

Please note that this is a one-year grant-supported position, with the possibility to extend if funding allows.

The position also requires occasional domestic travel.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Oversee project administration and project meetings, including reports on project progress, implementation, and budgets to Defenders staff and project donors
• Communicate and market the Living Lands project to a diverse audience, including land trusts, other conservation organizations, state or federal agencies, funding organizations, and the general public
• Maintain a constructive partnership with the Land Trust Alliance and integrate biodiversity conservation and climate change adaptation strategies into land trust training activities
• Provide training for land-trusts on how to apply funding from federal conservation programs (e.g., the Farm Bill, Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program) to restore and conserve biodiversity on land trust properties and easements
• Identify and initiate field level pilot projects in key states and regions to demonstrate a model for land trust biodiversity conservation, restoration, and climate change adaptation
• Represent Living Lands on behalf of Defenders and promote the ideas associated with biodiversity conservation on private lands in a variety of forums involving land trusts at the national, regional, and state level
• Lead the development of written publications, workshops, and multi-media presentations (including webinars and the Living Lands Website) on various aspects of the Living Lands project; present training materials at workshops, conferences, and briefing sessions
• Engage in grant writing and solicitation of support for the Living Lands project, including but not limited to grants, contracts, in-kind assistance, and political support
• Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Skill Requirements
NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor’s (B.A./B.S.) degree or equivalent in conservation biology, ecology, environmental policy, and/or other relevant discipline, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary coursework and integrative subject matter. Advanced degree preferred.

Experience: 4+ years of experience in working with natural resources issues and land trusts in the public and/or private sector

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

• Excellent written and verbal communications skills
• Familiarity with the land trust community, state/federal funding options for land trusts, and the economic incentives for land conservation
• Familiarity with the Farm Bill

• Self-starter with a flexible nature who has the ability to seek direction when needed
• Demonstrated ability to work with a multi-disciplinary team, in an environment with diverse interests, on complex natural resources issues
