The Sanford Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (SUSEL) at Homestake is a new world class underground science laboratory nestled in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. The former Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota was selected by the National Science Foundation as the official site where breakthrough scientific experiments will be conducted 4850 feet below the earth’s surface. Many scientists from around the country will be working together to create innovative and revolutionary methods of teaching science to young people across the nation. SUSEL’s vision is to become a Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) and eventually perform scientific experiments at 8000 feet below the surface, thus providing even greater opportunities for the scientific community.
