Founded in 1997 and headquartered in Wakefield, Massachusetts, Agion partners with it’s customers in the development of natural, customized antimicrobial solutions based on metal ion technology that continuously inhibit the growth of bacteria, fungus, biofilm and viruses. Agion’s technology is used in the healthcare, industrial and consumer markets. Agion also offers a disinfectant and virucide, SilverClene24™, which has been proven effective against a variety of bacteria and viruses including HIV-1, Rhinovirus, Influenza, and Poliovirus.
In the course of Agion’s disinfectant research the Company recognized a novel way to protect crops with metal ion technology. Such technology significantly reduces the current per acre use of active metals by 1/1000 and demonstrates synergy with conventional chemical fungicides, thereby reducing environmental loadings and reduces the risk of resistance to conventional active ingredients, with limited modes of action. This synergy has been confirmed in limited greenhouse studies conducted by Agion and confirmed by a global crop protection company. A series of patent applications on the technology have been filed globally. The strength of the initial results has prompted the USDA to award Agion an SBIR Phase I grant to promote development of the technology.
